The Sony SAIT1-500 is a marvellous piece of engineering. The SAIT1-500 has a 500 GB native and 1.3 TB compressed capacity. This tape (the Sony SAIT1-500) had the highest capacity amongst all commercially available tapes from 2003 to 2006 until it was displaced by the DLT-S4 which had an 800 GB capacity. The Sony SAIT1-500 was originally released to compete with LTO (Linear Tape Open) and its rapidly increasing market share. Another reason was that even Sony realised that the half-inch tape format was extremely popular, far more so than the 8mm tape format used in AIT tapes. The transfer rate for the SAIT1-500 tape is 30 MB/s native and 78 MB/s compressed. The SAIT1-500 tape also features a 64 Kb R-MIC (Remote - Memory In Cassette) which allows quicker file access and can also store a small amount of user defined data.
