There are two forms of AIT tapes, AIT and SAIT Super-AIT

The AIT comes in 8 mm, with dual reel cartridge. SAIT comes in 1/2", with single reel cartridge, which is similar to DLT and LTO tape formats.

The generations of AIT are backwards and forwards compatible. So, the ait has edge over other tape formats. In this way the different generations of AIT tape drives can both read and write to multiple generations of tape media. Helical scan method is used in both AIT and SAIT for reading and writing the tape. Helical scan method is also known as striping.
