The Sony SDX3150C…The question that I have been trying to find an answer to for years is whether or not it is an SDX3150C. By finally making an effort and Googling it, I have found that it is indeed an AIT-3 tape, however it is not just that but an AIT-3Ex tape. For those who use AIT-Turbo tapes the significance of the Ex should be clear however for those who are clueless regarding what Ex means, I shall shed some enlightenment. The Sony SDX3150C tape is an AIT-3Ex tape, as stated earlier, what this means is that the SDX3150C is for use with AIT Turbo drives. It may be compatible with common AIT tape drives and auto-loaders depending on how recent the drive is and whether or not it can support AIT Turbo tapes. The SDX3X150C has a 150 GB native capacity and a 390 GB compressed capacity thanks to Sony’s amazing compression techniques that allow a compression ratio of up to 2.6:1. This is also partly due to the use of AME II (Advanced Metal Evaporated II) tape formulation. The usage of this new and improved tape formulation also means that the recording performance and throughput rate are greatly improved due to a reduction in noise.
