One of the most compelling features of the SAIT1-CL is that it contains a 64 kBit R-MIC (Remote - Memory In Cassette) which contains specific cleaning patterns for different conditions of the tape drive. Thus it may implement a less rigorous cleaning cycle if the tape is relatively clean thereby saving some of the cleaning tape for future use. Cleaning tapes are absolutely necessary and not just for SAIT-1 tape drives as well. All tape drives and auto-loaders require cleaning at some point or the other.
